Maybe it’s just not enough

Writing back again, end of the semester, beginning of my “vacation” (research and working is not part of a regular definition of a vacation, but it’s what is available at the moment). It has been a long journey these past 4 years, but I have learned so much about the university, friends, family and my life. Now, as I am closer to reach the finish line of my B.A., I start to get chills and excitement as I “try” to plan my future academic goals: my grad school. I’ve had the initiative to look at many different schools that offer Anthropology, Latin American Studies and History, disciplines in which I would like to do my graduate studies. But, in my country and in the perception of people that I know, studying in Latin America is seen as something that does not have the “wow” effect of other universities like the American Ivy Leagues or other prestigious universities of the world. I tell people that I would love to study in the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM in spanish) and people ask me Why Mexico? or Why that university? or why go there when there are other universities that have better standing in the global perception. This has been something that has given me a bitter sweet sensation, normally because I have been a very secure person on what I want in my future. This situation has given me serious doubts about where I want to study and what I want to do with the rest of my life, people don’t normally have opportunities to do what they love in life. That’s another thing, dear reader, my family does not know fully what I wish to do after my B.A.: they have heard conversations about Mexico, Anthropology and Latin America and the possibility of going to study in UNAM, but they have not taken it quite seriously as I have. They still have the idea that I’m going to study Law and be another of the many lawyers that my country has. I guess I should stop writing now dear reader, maybe at some other time I can finish thinking. Thank you for reading me, I hope I didn’t take too much time from you.
